CAROLINE AND MARKERVILLE—TWO SHOWS—ONE DIRECTION—THEN ANOTHER—THEN ANOTHER AND BACK

There are two annual shows on the same Sunday every August and they’re in the same direction…west.

That’s the theory behind the Caroline and Markerville car shows in west central Alberta Canada but yesterday was a west-east-west-east Sunday drive.

Jim and I hit the Caroline show just before 11am and found out the show starts at 1pm. That’s not their fault—I want to blame it on Jim for not checking the fine print.

The Caroline show had a few early entries, but they were still setting up, so the best decision was to head back east to Markerville and check out their event. This show exploded in size overnight because it was three times the size it was last year and five times the size it’s been for years.

There are many reasons for this. I think the ice cream and pie from the Markerville Creamery Museum is a big factor but it’s more than that. This place is a postcard venue because it’s right beside the river and it never changes. The history is clear when you roll into Markerville.

There were many potential stories, but Jim spotted a 1957 GMC one ton at the show. It looked mint, and it was clearly an old farm truck.

It fit right in because Markerville is farm country. Hopefully you’ll see this beauty in a future MyStar story.

The other one was a 1955 Studebaker with a deep family history. This is a local car so I’ve seen it many times, but I had no idea that it was such a legacy car.

You’ll learn more about it when it becomes a MyStar owner’s story.

The next stage was to head back to Caroline for the start of their event. This drive is through some really nice country, so it was a good workout for the old Dodge.

The trip back to Caroline was worth it. The show had filled up and Jim spotted a 1952 Pontiac Chieftain that showed its years—but in a very cool way.

The original motor was gone but what was under the hood made a big improvement. Look for the story late this year or early next year.

Jim also discovered a 1958 Edsel Citation two-door hardtop at Caroline.

Two-door Edsels are a rare sight at any show, so it was a definite candidate for a MyStar story.

There was also a 1956 Ford two-door sedan at the show.

The owner wasn’t around it, so the only thing to do was leave a card and hope for a reply. It looked like a survivor—hopefully MyStar gets the story.

That might seem like a lot of miles to get two stories, but the journey is the real story because it’s late August and the season for road trips in a 1960 Dodge is fading. There are no points for trailer queens in the real world.
