SEPTEMBER 2024: 1977 FORD PICKUP—FROM NO REAL STORY TO A GREAT STORY

MyStar’s motto is ‘Behind Every Car There’s A Great Story’

Typically, the longer you own the car or truck, the more stories you have about it. It’s almost  like a math equation for old iron, but in this case the owner and vehicle had only been acquainted for a few months.

Bill Burrell is the proud owner of this 1977 Ford pickup truck with 54,000 documented miles. He’s always been a Ford guy, so this mint truck was really attractive when he saw it at an auction back in March 2024.

Bill also had the enthusiastic support of his wife because she really liked the truck too—this is rare because very few wives encourage their husbands to add another old truck to the fleet. Bill had the golden key to a very cool truck thanks to his wife’s enthusiasm for the ’77 Ford Stepside.

The truck was as advertised in the auction catalogue because it was in great shape, but it was missing the radio. Bill wanted the radio to complete the look of the truck, so he went looking for a replacement.

A couple told them at a car show they had the exact radio, but he had to take the whole truck. Bill wasn’t intimidated by that, so he grabbed his trailer and rolled out to their property. He found out the truck was buried in the bush so he would have had to chop trees down to even get close to the donor truck. Bill thought that was a massive job, so he offered to pay for the radio, but it was a take-the-whole-truck or leave it deal. He left it.

The rest of the truck is fantastic. The 351 Windsor under the hood runs like a Swiss watch and everything works great. The interior is mint, and the truck runs down the road like it’s brand new.

There was a mice issue because this truck went into hibernation, but there’s no damage to the wiring. The only thing—besides the radio is the wood in the truck bed. Bill said he “may do that down the road”, but there’s nothing he needs to do in the immediate future—that’s rare with old iron.

Some car guys would buy a truck like this and park it to keep the miles down and the wear minimum. Fortunately, Bill isn’t that guy. He loves driving it and he welcomes the attention it gets because it’s so clean and it’s a Stepside. Most of those versions were work trucks and they came with barebone options—nothing fancy like this truck.

The reason Bill has a story behind this truck after only a few months of ownership is because he likes it enough to drive it every chance he can. It’s close to being a daily driver because he invents reasons to take it out in the real world.
