MYSTAR DECEMBER 27 FIVE FOR FRIDAY: FIVE HIGHLIGHTS FROM 2024

2024 was the 15th year for MyStarCollectorCar—it was a highlight reel on many fronts.

The biggest problem is distilling the highlights down to five because there were so many of them this past year.

I’ve said it many times over the years, but this is the best job in the world because it’s still fun after over 15 years. You can’t say that about working at 7-11.

There’s been a massive learning curve over those years that never ends because there’s always something new to learn on the tech side, the presentation side and the writing side.

This is the true definition of the cliché, “If you ain’t learnin’, you ain’t earnin”.

The second highlight of 2024 was the Route 63 road trip back in March.

MyStar believes in the road warrior philosophy because if you don’t drive it–why own it? Sell it to a guy who will drive it.

Route 63 was a simple concept—drive a ’63 Plymouth through several states down to Amarillo, Texas and do a Route 66 tour through Texas, New Mexico and Utah.

This run included Deadwood, North Dakota, Cadillac Ranch, Grand Canyon, Monument Valley and Cisco Utah (where the movie ‘Vanishing Point’ ended. The old Plymouth was heroic on this 5000-mile, 8-day road trip—truly a major 2024 highlight.

The third highlight was the car show circuit.

It’s hard to believe these shows hold the same excitement they did nearly 16 years ago–but they do. That’s a lot of interviews, a lot of miles, a lot of photos and a lot of words, but again—it never gets old. It never gets old because you’re always going to see a cool car in a cool location on a nice summer day. If you believe in Car Guy Heaven—that’s it.

The fourth highlight is the scope of the old car hobby.

You’re seeing people in the hobby who have just entered it, and their enthusiasm is off the charts. Everything is new to them and they’re rescuing cars that typically wouldn’t be rescued because they look cool—not because they’ll bring 100K at auction.

That to me is the true spirit of this world because old school builds began and ended at junkyards where everything was affordable. You also did as much as you could yourself and called in buddies when you needed them. That’s still going on with kids who buy old iron in high school—MyStar has many examples on the pages.

The last highlight is Jack—a 1995 Buick Roadmaster wagon.

Jack was featured on MyStar this year because it had a great story behind it, and it was used to hit a few cars shows this summer. This car is the ultimate road machine because it’s like riding in an air-conditioned couch with a Vette engine.

Jack is now part of the MyStar fleet thanks to a generous milestone birthday gift from my brother Don. He thought Jack would have a great life on the road to car shows in 2025 and he’s right.
