The sun was already starting to set on the station wagon by 1987 because the mini van craze was already in full swing for the family hauler market.
Nevertheless, the upscale Buick division at General Motors still offered three different station wagon models, including the mid-sized Buick Century.

Robert Samonig owns a 1987 Buick Century station wagon and admits he was likely influenced by his parents because his father owned a 1982 Buick sedan, and his mother later owned a 1985 Buick sedan.

Both cars clearly left an impression upon Robert when he seized an opportunity to purchase his ’87 Buick wagon in 2013. The wagon had been off the road for several years and had suffered through some hard years, including time spent on gravel roads, according to Robert.

The 38-year-old station wagon had even been damaged by a hailstorm, although most of the damage was repaired after the incident. Robert noticed the Buick’s roof rack still required a few repairs, so he removed it but damaged the mounting plugs during the process. It was an unanticipated problem, but Robert was able to find a solution.

Robert also dealt with many other issues such as tires, brakes, brake lines, and exhaust replacement because he wanted the wagon to be roadworthy and safe. A new windshield was also in the works, but most glass guys were reluctant to install it because they had no concept about his car’s glass. Fortunately, Robert as able to find a glass guy who installed the windshield and included a generic windshield gasket in the process.

Robert told MyStarCollectorCar his Buick had a comparative US sticker price of $16,500 at the time but did not indicate its Canadian sticker price when it was initially sold at a GM dealership in Sherwood Park, Alberta Canada.

However, Robert noted that only 508 Buick Century station wagons were sold in the Canadian market in 1987, with only 43 of them sold in his car’s Rosewood Metallic paint scheme.
The ’87 Century wagon is equipped with every possible option available that year, except for power mirrors, according to Robert. The long list includes power steering, power brakes, air conditioning, power seats, power windows, cruise control and ever other creature comfort available to Buick buyers in 1987. Robert added NOS (new old stock) full-sized wheel covers to complete the wagon’s upscale style.

Ownership of a very original 1987 Buick Century station wagon makes Robert a member of a small group of car guys in 2024 because so few of these cars were sold in the first place- let alone avoided a date with the crusher over the past 3 decades.
Robert told MyStarCollectorCar that he has logged about 1400 kms (a little under 900 miles) behind the wheel of his mid-sized 1987 Buick station wagon since Robert became its second owner.

Initially, his car guy buddies “gave me grief”, in Robert’s words, but he was unperturbed because ownership of a rare Buick wagon from the past has its privileges in 2025.
He knows it’s a very elite club.
