SEPTEMBER 7, 2015: HOW A CAR STORY GOES FROM AN IMPRESSION TO A MYSTAR FEATURE

IMGP7839-001

Our motto at MyStarCollectorCar has always been pretty basic: there is a story behind every car.

Some of the stories are simply more interesting than others and those are the stories we chase here at MSCC.

The ones that grab our attention are sometimes visual because we like to follow the crowd at shows.

DSC02618

Any ride with plenty of people around it will also grab our readers’ attention and we will seek out the owner to get the vehicle’s history. The story gets better if the owner has some form of direct involvement with the history of the vehicle, whether through personal family history or a hands-on approach to the actual build.

IMGP3229-001

The story gets less interesting if the owner simply wrote a check for the car and it is a flavor-of-the-week purchase for him or her.

DSC_0552

Sometimes we will find unlikely stories at shows when we see a less flashy ride and become curious about its history with the owner. It may be an entry level ride for a car guy/girl who loves the vintage vehicle hobby but cannot afford the high end rides at this point in their lives.

SEPT 2 2013 GULL LAKE JIM PIX 026

Or it may be a family legacy vehicle that was purchased by an older relative and passed on down to the next generation-or generation after the next generation. These are stories where the current owner takes a trip down memory lane every time they climb behind the wheel and hit the road in the family legacy ride.

IMGP5244

Oddball rides work well for us at MSCC, whether they are vehicles built from a defunct automobile company that was unable to compete with the big boys, or a freestyle rat rod designed from the active imagination of its owner.

IMGP5674-001

Customs are always a good bet for us because they are also rolling art-only built with a completely different game plan than a junkyard dog rat rod. The best of the customs are flawless in every way, from their trick paint to their reworked sheet metal, and they get rock star treatment from their admirers at every show.

IMGP5789-001

We zero in on our automotive targets such as the aforementioned ride types at shows and hope we connect with their owners. Sometimes that owner search is the most difficult part of the process. Once we find the owner, we ask them a series of questions from the “who-what-when-and-why” interview list and nail down the details.

IMGP5746

Our most important question is the “why” question because we like to know why they chose the vehicle, since that question is the heart of the story for us at MSCC. We spend every summer at many car shows in hot pursuit of stories and we typically run the finished stories 6 months to a year after we interview the owners. We provide this timeline information during every interview and explain their car stories will not appear right away on MSCC, plus we also let them know their stories will not appear in a print magazine.

IMGP5606

The entire process takes plenty of time from initially spotting a ride to publishing the story on MSCC-and we love every minute of it.

MSCC SEPTEMBER 6 STAR OF THE WEEK: ’67 HEMI GTX—GOOD THINGS COME IN PLAIN WRAPPERS

0

IMGP8789-001MSCC SEPTEMBER 6 STAR OF THE WEEK: ’67 HEMI GTX—GOOD THINGS COME IN PLAIN WRAPPERS

Chrysler took more bows for its engineering prowess than its good looks in the 60s.

They were clean-looking, functional cars but nobody confused a ’63 Plymouth with a ’63 Vette when both were fresh out of the showroom.

Chrysler didn’t care because their buyers were pragmatic people who liked reliability over looks but when you needed a raging monster under the hood Mopar came through in a big way back in the 60s.

This MSCC Star of the Week plain Jane (dog dish hubcaps and all) ’67 Hemi GTX is all about how good things (and monsters) come in plain wrappers.

IMGP9658-001MSCC SEPTEMBER 5 STAR OF THE DAY: 1951 L-160 IHC—BECAUSE FARM TRUCKS ARE SPIKING IN COOL FACTOR

There was a time (probably less than ten years ago) when you couldn’t give away an old farm truck.

You’d see 40 or 50-year-old trucks at auctions with less than 20,000 miles sell for less than 1000 bucks.

Nobody seemed to want these old farmhands until a few years ago when people suddenly realized these old trucks are affordable classics.

This MSCC ’51 IHC L-160 was at an August show where it was surrounded by admirers because these old farm trucks are spiking in cool factor.

IMGP8231MSCC SEPTEMBER 4 STAR OF THE DAY: ANY DAY IS A GOOD DAY IN A VINTAGE VETTE

Life is full of good days and bad days.

Good days for car guys are warm and sunny—not scorching hot days because old carbs and radiators hate new gas and excessive heat.

That’s the perfect scenario for vintage rides.

This MSCC Star of the Day is the exception because this old classic was out in horrible weather because any day is good day in a vintage Vette.

SEPT 11 2013-GREY EAGLE JIM PIX 004MSCC SEPTEMBER 3 STAR OF THE DAY: VW 411 – VOLKSWAGEN MOVES ON FROM THE BEETLE ERA

Volkswagen couldn’t lose with the Beetle because it was cheap enough and cute enough for owners to forgive its limitations.

You could overlook a Beetle’s lack of heat, lukewarm power and hairy road manners when you pushed it too far because these cars were icons.

Nevertheless, lifestyles changed and Beetle owners needed more room and more doors so VW introduced the 411 to give buyers more options.

This MSCC Star of the Day 411 is how VW moved on from the Beetle era.

IMGP8170-001

MSCC SEPTEMBER 2 STAR OF THE DAY: ’56 METEOR NIAGARA—THINGS GOT A LITTLE WEIRD NORTH OF THE BORDER

Canadians have fought an identity crisis since 1867 because they live in the shadow of the most powerful country in the world.

Proximity to the United States produces odd rules like mandatory Canadian content regulations on radio and TV to protect national identity via state-issued music and television.

This isn’t a new concept-it’s been around for decades.

This MSCC Star of the Day ’56 Meteor Niagara is a great example of how things got a little weird north of the border 60 years ago.

IMG_0232MSCC SEPTEMBER 1 STAR OF THE DAY: CHEVELLE SS ON ‘ROIDS – I LOVE THE SMELL OF RACING FUEL IN THE MORNING

Apocalypse Now had one the best lines ever delivered by Robert Duvall.

He was in the middle of a major firefight on a beach and he said: “ I love the smell of napalm in the morning…The smell, you know that gasoline smell”.

The same thing happened yesterday in traffic because a guy rolled up in traffic yesterday in this muscled-out, far from stock SS Chevelle and clearly it was running race fuel.
MSCC Star of the Day—the smell of racing fuel in the morning.

IMG_0230

MSCC AUGUST 31 STAR OF THE DAY: CHALLENGER CONVERTIBLE-A DAY FOR GOING TOPLESS

Yesterday was the last weekend of August 2015 and it went out in a blaze of glory.
There were several great examples of old iron on the street because car guys can sense when the season is on the back 9.

Every car on the street yesterday was cool but one guy was a notch above in the cool department.

This MSCC Star of the Day Challenger convertible made a strong case for going topless.

SEPTEMBER 2015: UNEXPECTEDLY COOL: A 1964 FORD GALAXIE WAGON

0

IMGP5536

Full-sized station wagons were once kings of the road.

They were the most popular mode of transportation to haul a kiddie explosion known as baby boomers during their childhood years.

Most of us barely noticed them when we were kids, even though they were right in front of our eyeballs on the roads during the 60s and 70s.

Station wagons were hardly the stuff of dreams for kiddie car guys during the 60s and 70s, an era when muscle cars and pony cars got our undivided attention.

IMGP6223

Then the station wagons were gone, replaced by mini vans and sport utility vehicles for the coveted kid-hauler job. The ultimate in un-cool automotive transportation in the eyes of children who grew up in the 60s and 70s performed the best disappearing act since bubble gum music and the 1910 Fruitgum Company.
The disappearance of the 60s-70s station wagon caused an unexpected reaction for now-middle-aged baby boomers: we missed them. Their disappearance was a lost connection with our own childhoods and we began to miss the unloved wagons.

IMGP6222

That sense of loss has driven up the value of any vintage station wagon that managed to dodge the crusher for all of these decades. We seize every opportunity to get a wagon story so a survivor 1964 Ford Galaxie station wagon was high on our list at a car show.
The Galaxie’s owner was Ron Marchuk and he was the right owner because he was old enough to remember station wagons on the road very well from his own childhood. Ron’s father owned a 1963 ½ Ford, so he had some fond memories of this automotive era from a personal point of view.
The wagon had spent its life in Ocean City, California, including 25 years in warehouse storage until last fall when Ron rescued it from confinement. Ron is an experienced mechanic who currently enjoys a life of semi-retirement and wanted to own a vehicle from a simpler time.

IMGP6224

The wagon fit the bill because Ron only needed to replace the hoses, spark plugs and wires, then add a new battery to put the 51-year-old Ford back on the road. In fact he had a 350 mile road trip planned for the wagon the next week following our interview. We spotted the car at a few shows this past summer and it was running like a top.
The car has only a few options, including a power back window and a clock, but its most important option is likely its overdrive because Ron’s wagon is a column-mounted manual transmission and the overdrive system is a valuable asset.

IMGP6227

He averaged around 70 mph (110 km/h) on the highway during his first trip in the wagon and found it was very comfortable at that speed. Ron pointed out the cars were engineered during a relatively modern era for higher speeds and have little difficulty running on modern roads.

His Ford is equipped with a 289 engine and provides plenty of power for the wagon.

IMGP6229

Ron describes his car as “all original and clean underneath.”

We describe his car as all original and very cool everywhere, a concept we never saw coming when we were kids riding in station wagons.

SEPTEMBER 2015 STARS OF THE SHOW: A LITTLE BIT OF SHOW, A LITTLE BIT OF GO OR A LITTLE BIT OF BOTH

IMGP8247-001

SEPTEMBER 2015 STARS OF THE SHOW: A LITTLE BIT OF SHOW, A LITTLE BIT OF GO OR A LITTLE BIT OF BOTH

The car show is not easily defined because there are so many versions.

Some elite shows are based strictly on judging and points and you’ll see Duesenbergs, Cords and Bugattis surrounded by guys in formal wear.

Most shows are less uptown so you’ll see rat rods next to vintage Vettes and restored grain trucks.

Tuxedos are optional.

The biggest common denominator is this—most shows will have a little bit of show, a little bit of go or a little bit of both.

SEPTEMBER 3, 2015: THE 1975 DODGE 100 SOLUTION: WHEN YOUR CHEVY BURNS IN A FIRE

0

IMGP4592

Clayton Muncaster used to be the proud owner of a 1967 Chevy truck until a bizarre fire cooked the old pickup truck.

Clayton’s truck was parked in an area where a train sparked a grass fire and his Chevy was burnt beyond repair. Clayton’s truck was a “victim of circumstance”, to borrow heavily from misunderstood comic god Curly Howard of the Three Stooges.

Clayton’s in laws felt sorry for him, in fact sorry enough for his brother in law to offer a 1975 Dodge Adventurer SE truck to replace the crispy Chevy.

IMGP4583

Clayton had some history with Mopar because his grandfather was a devoted fan of the Chrysler brand and accepted his brother in law’s generous offer.

IMGP4585

The 70s-era Dodge pickup truck was a replacement for the Dodge Sweptline trucks that had a 10 year model run from 1961 t0 1971. The 1972 Dodge was a major departure from its predecessor and put Dodge trucks right in step with the new decade at the time.
The post-71 Dodge trucks were designed with more creature comforts such as coil front suspension and an ability to actually handle three passengers with its wider cab. The buckboard wagon effect from the four leaf suspension of the Sweptline Dodges was a thing of the past with the introduction of the 1972 Dodge trucks.

IMGP4582

The then-new Dodge trucks were a popular choice as a fleet truck in the 70s and many of them found their way onto job sites all over North America. The trucks were worked hard and few survived into the 21st century unless they had exhaust stacks and Little Red Express decals on their doors.
Some still remain on the road, mostly as working trucks that have survived through the many decades since they left the factory in the 70s.
The Adventurer SE models were an upscale version of the basic Dodge truck during the 70s and likely stood a better chance for survival for that reason (i.e. more likely to be pampered), so Clayton had a pretty good head start with his ’75.

IMGP4584

Clayton is a young guy with good mechanical skills and decided he needed to put his own stamp on the Dodge pickup. He cut the front coils down by 4 ½ inches and installed a four link air ride system on the back end of the truck.
He also installed spark plugs, spark plug wires, coil and added a header exhaust system to the truck’s 360 engine. Clayton calls it “still a project in the works” in the best tradition of every car guy on the planet.

IMGP4589

Clayton has addressed the mechanical issues on the truck and can now concentrate on future cosmetic upgrades to his 40-year-old truck. In the meantime, he has enjoyed his time behind the wheel of his old truck.
Clayton doesn’t push the old truck too hard on the highway right now and is content to enjoy the scenery at a leisurely pace while he plots the Dodge’s future-which presumably will not be too close to train tracks.
