MSCC FEB 15 STAR OF THE WEEK: ’60 IMPERIAL CONVERTIBLE – FROM THE LAND OF BATTLESHIP SIZED LUXURY CARS

There was an era when regular sized cars would be considered giants by today’s standards.

1960 was part of that large car era despite the birth of the Big 3 compact cars (Corvair, Falcon and Valiant).

The evidence is found in this MSCC Star of the Week ’60 Imperial convertible because this baby clearly ain’t no compact car.

It came from the land of the battleship-sized cars.

MSCC FEB 14 STAR OF THE DAY: OLDS 442—THE SUBTLE VERSION OF A PUNCH IN THE MOUTH

Oldsmobile was always the upscale, less flashy cousin to the Chevys and Pontiac.

They had hotter versions like the J-2 Golden Rocket in ’57 but most people mistakenly saw Oldmobiles as fairly sedate cars—something a great uncle would drive.

That perception changed in 1964 when the Olds 442 was introduced.

This MSCC Star of the Day Olds 442 was on the street back in 2012 and it defined a simple idea.

A 442 truly is a subtle version of a punch in the mouth.

Friday the 13th is a superstition that really didn’t gain any traction as a concept until the early stages of the 20th century.

It blended the older Black Friday superstition with a traditional fear of the number 13 so it was really the perfect basis for fear of a random day on a calendar.

This MSCC Star of the Day is the perfect antidote to any so-called bad luck day.

That’s because a lucky pair of classic rods beats Friday the 13th bad mojo-all day, any day.

MSCC FEB 12 STAR OF THE DAY: THERE ARE VETTES AND THERE ARE MONSTER VETTES

Corvettes are one of those cars that automatically gather attention but they do it in a subtle way.

Vettes have a look at me attitude but not a neon sign look at me attitude.

This MSCC Star of the Day Vette is clearly a monster version of the legendary sports car.

There are Vettes and there are monster Vettes.

MSCC FEB 11 STAR OF THE DAY: ’69 FORD TALLADEGA—THE OTHER SUPER SLIPPERY NASCAR RIDE

Dodge threw down the gauntlet in ’69 with the Charger 500 because they were getting thumped by the fastback Torino Talladega and Mercs Cyclone Spoiler II.

The B-body Mopes were legendary cool, but that front end and roofline was a liability on the big tracks so they slicked it up with the 500.

The 500 wasn’t enough to overcome the Talladega aero advantage so Dodge took the big leap to the Daytona in the ’69 season.

MSCC FEB 10 STAR OF THE DAY: ’56 CHEVY NOMAD – A LONG ROOF THAT’S A NATURAL TREASURE

Station wagons used to be very uncool so many of them were force fed into demo derbies or shredders at the end of their careers.

They were big, heavy machines so either grim end made sense for most wagons.

There were very few exceptions to the ‘I hate long roofs’ movement, but any woody wagon and all Chevy Nomads were huge exceptions.

This MSCC Feb 10 Star of the Day ’56 Nomad at an August 2014 show was definitely one of those exceptions-it’s a national treasure.

MSCC FEB 9 STAR OF THE DAY: ’70 PLYMOUTH GTX—A STEP UP ON A ROADRUNNER

Mopar B-bodies are in a class of their own in the muscle car world but there are classes within the B-body world.

The GTX debuted the year before the Roadrunner set the muscle car world on its ear and this gentleman’s hot rod had one thing going against it.

GTXs were a little pricey when compared to the GTO, so the Roadrunner was born.

Nevertheless, GTXs cut a wide swath on the street and in the dealer showrooms so you’ll still see examples like this MSCC Star of the Day ’70 GTX.
