HIGHLIGHTS FROM 2025—ROAD TRIPS, CAR SHOWS AND CAR GUY PERSPECTIVES

2025 was another great year in the car hobby.

To be honest, this world of old iron is like going to Disneyland because even if it’s raining…you’re still in Disneyland.

The car show circuit is the backbone of this culture for MyStar because that’s how you meet the owners—and get the interviews. That’s also how you learn how widespread the car hobby is because it’s crammed with different cars, trucks, owners, and stories.

This year was like every year with plenty of road trips to cover the events. Long-term readers know how much respect MyStar has for road warriors, so many of these runs were done in classic iron.

A small, functional, newer plastic car with great gas mileage makes sense if you’re more of an accountant and less of a car guy—but that’s not how MyStar rolls. You can’t beat the satisfaction of arriving at a car show in something that was built before the Beatles hit the Ed Sullivan Show and ignited a legend.

It’s a simple formula. You’re part of the brotherhood in old iron—you’re not part of it in a brand-new Toyota Highlander.

Regular MyStar readers also know that Jack (a 1995 Buick Roadmaster wagon) was added to the fleet, thanks to a generous milestone birthday gift–courtesy of my brother Don.

Jack’s a new car by MyStar standards—a mere 30 years old. The big Roadmaster was put into service many times this year, including a 1400-mile round trip to a show in West Kelowna, B.C. for a cool little show in a great venue.

This big wagon makes it too easy because a ’95 Buick wagon rides better than 98% of any vehicles on the road today. Jack seems like a new car to the MyStar guys who live in a world where the 60s and 70s never left, but it’s classic iron to most people. That’s why Jack gets the same attention as the ’60 Dodge and the ’63 Plymouth.

I didn’t see that coming.

The ’63 Plymouth did the first major road trip of 2025.

This was a 1750-mile round trip to Clandeboye,Manitoba that more of an odyssey than a road trip because it was the 60th anniversary of the exact road trip Jim and I did with our dad in a ’63 Plymouth back in June 1965.

That trip proved why you should own an old car. There’s some risk factor with a 62-year-old car, but this journey was worth every mile. It had major rain, a drive-in theater, a car show and new backroads–and it was the ultimate trip back in time.

There is no vacation on earth better than that road trip in the old Plymouth—it justified every hour it took to get the Plymouth back on the road back in 2015. Non car guys will never understand that feeling.

The final road trips of the 2025 season took place in Lacombe and Sylvan Lake, Alberta.

These two towns both put on a solid Christmas parade, so Jack was drafted into the fun this year. These events represent the best part of the Christmas season—so did Jack.
